Domestic Sector Energy Requirements Ellie Dodds 2E02 Group D February 24th 2005
Assumptions and other factors • Replacement Rate of houses: • 50,000 -100,000 new, more efficient houses built each year • Conservation effects from this not seen till after 2010 • Conservation measures: • In 1987 only 3% of homes had full insulation • In 2002 this had gone up to 15% of all homes • Lighting and appliances have all made homes use more energy • More homes have central heating
Factors Affecting Future Energy Use in the UK Domestic Sector • Size of population and number of households • Average Area of each household • Comfort level desired by each household • Demand for non-space heating process (water heating, cooking, appliances) by each household • Efficiency with which energy is used to meet space and water heating demand
Projection of UK population and number of households 1985-2010 From Energy Use and Energy Efficiency in the UK Domestic Sector up to year 2010.
Electricity Consumption by household Domestic Appliances by broad type, 1970-2002 • Key • Lighting • Brown: TV, VCR, DVD player, Satellite, Cable • Cold: Freezers, Fridges etc • Cooking: Ovens, Microwaves • Wet: Washing machines, Dishwashers, Tumble Dryers • Miscellaneous: Vacuums, Irons, Electric Showers, Central Heating pumps From www.DTI.gov.uk
Domestic Sector Split into fuel type • Coal, Oil, Gas and Electricity are all used in the domestic sector for various purposes • Coal is used in homes for heating-open fires • Oil is used in Central heating • Gas is used for Central heating, both oil and gas consumption are dependent on external temperatures • Electricity is used for running domestic appliances
