Colorado Rural Health Center (CRHC) Colorado’s nonprofit State Office of Rural Health CRHC’s mission is to enhance healthcare services in the state by providing information, education, linkages, tools and energy toward addressing rural health issues. CRHC works with federal, state and local partners to offer services and resources to rural healthcare providers, facilities and communities. CRHC has a statewide constituency of over 3,500 people and organizations working to ensure that all rural Coloradans have access to comprehensive, affordable, high quality healthcare.

  4. Rural Health Clinics (RHCs) Congress passed the Rural Health Clinics Services Act to encourage and stabilize the provision of outpatient primary care in underserved rural areas. Employment and utilization of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants is a key component. Some of the RHCs are affiliated with a small rural hospital, and the others are independently owned and operated.

  6. Challenges Facing Rural In 2009, approximately 13.8% of rural Colorado was in poverty, compared to an average of 12.4% in the urban parts of the state. In 2011, on average 13.1% of the population in rural counties was over 65 years, as compared to only 8.7% in urban. Parts of the state still have substandard internet access and connectivity. Rural residents are more likely to report fair to poor health. There are higher rates of obesity, more chronic disease, higher rates of smoking and higher suicide rates in rural areas.

  7. Considerations for Advisory Committee The average rate of uninsured individuals age 64 and under in rural is 23.5%, above the state’s average of 18.5%. There are larger numbers of small businesses and individuals seeking coverage in rural. In 2010, the number of small businesses offering health insurance in Colorado declined by 10%. The availability of health insurance plans is limited.

  8. Outreach Considerations Unstable economic structures in rural communities means people will churn. Some rural residents have limited access to internet connectivity or limited ability to use it. Rural residents have greater transportation difficulties. BUT, rural has a strong sense of community responsibility and propensity to collaborate!
