Easy to research Sells shares to general public Must make public and report on regular basis for many items, including financials Files reports with SEC • Hard to research • Isprivately owned/held • Does not have to disclose financial info • Information is scarce.

  4. SIC vs. NAICS – Example Starbucks • Starbucks Primary SIC and NAICS • SIC Code 2095 • (Roasted Coffee) • NAICS Code 311920 • (Coffee and Tea Manufacturing) • Pulls information together for company or industry

SIC &NAICS • Numeric classification codes • Describe individual industries • Collect data on specific industries • Classify and compare companies • May vary from source-to-source • e.g. US Economic Census vs. Mergent Online • Revised over time • SICs 1930s to 1980s I NAICS Late 1980s on • Tables are available to look up SIC/NAICS codes • Also assigned to companies throughout databases
