Our Current Challenges We’ve had little effect a few major barriers: • Traffic volume • Traffic speed • Weather (snow) CFMS student walking rates have improved – but not as dramatically as CFIS. Can we do a better job there? (Violence/Crime and “Fun Factor”)
Traffic Volume and Speed • This is a village problem more than a school problem. • Recurring complaint in the comments of surveys. • Possible Solutions • Street Smarts or Pace Car program for residents? • Better driver training at High School? • Visible police patrols?
Weather • Snow removal efforts last year • Village Council sent letter to residents • Police visited homes with blocked walkways at our request. (We solicited complaints online.) • Village owned property was cleared by Village crews. This year: Ad in paper? Snow removal community service for “shut ins” as determined by police force? Letters to property owners with referrals to snow removal businesses? (Maybe even fundraiser?)

CFMS – How do we win over the kids? • Unique barriers: Light, Activities, “Fun” factor • Walking Club funding – where can we go with this? • Biking promotion (Spring) • Any thoughts from the MoveSmart program? • Possibility of extending from Challenge Day (walking clubs/partners)? • Integrate with Environmental Clubs or High School? • Examples from Marin County
Violence/Crime Concern at CFMS? • Not certain what this means – could be bullying, drugs/alcohol, abduction. Maybe we need better data to address this. • Consider personal safety training again? Could be offered as after school program or in concert with gym classes?
Future Directions: • Focus more effort on crossing guards. Need to make this a stable, sustainable program. Consider adding a guard at 7-12 campus in future. • Work on “fun factor” at CFMS. Need ideas for this! Focus on biking may be a possibility. • Help address village wide issue of traffic; encourage “share the road” policies, speed reduction, traffic calming. • Work on integrating the Safe Routes program with other pedestrian and cycling advocacy groups for bigger impact.
