  2. The Garden Begins in 2007 • Create a community garden to serve local food pantry needs and create leadership opportunities for students • Utilize hard working students who possess varying levels of academic and disciplinary success • Use school grounds and donated plants to achieve goal

  3. Since January 2010… • The Valley View Community Garden has • allowed volunteer opportunities for over 300 students and parents • had over 80 staff members volunteer a week of their summer for 4 seasons

  4. Since January 2010… • The Community Garden has • sold over 100 pounds to the high school cafeteria and local businesses • provided over 3500 pounds of fresh vegetables to families in need

  5. The idea for a greenhouse • Our first “greenhouse” inside Valley View High School • Our students charted growth differences based on different variables such as sunlight and water.

  6. We knew we would need help Volunteers • give 1-6 hours of their summer • earn volunteer service hours • Make an impact on their local community

  7. Help from the community • Stockslager’s Greenhouse and Garden Center continues to be an amazing resource for our project. • Local gardeners, farmers and parents offer advice throughout the year.

  8. Who benefits? • Local families • Those who volunteer • Students of Valley View High School • Through 40 Assets • Hands on curriculum

  9. The 7 staff team ready to provide standard based curriculum • Science Department • Agricultural Department • Family and Consumer Science Department • Special Education Department

  10. Agricultural Department Numerous lab experiments on how plants grow and under what conditions they are optimal. Producing plants for sales/fundraisers (Poinsettias/Vegetable and bedding plants).

  11. Science Department • Biology & Science II • Photosynthesis • Water flow • Fertilizer and plant growth • Plant biodiversity • Scientific Inquiry • Lab based experiments

  12. Family and ConsumerScience Department • Ensure Food Safety • kitchen practices that sustain the environment • Advocate a Healthy Lifestyle • Create food patterns related to healthy lifestyle outcomes • Become Consumer Savvy • (financial literacy) and College Life Skills

  13. Special Education Department • Real life experiences that relate to assisting others and positive work experiences • Local Growth • Plant Production • Lab Experiments

  14. How is it funded? • Our garden and greenhouse is self sustaining through small side jobs performed by our special needs classroom.
