  2. Same Old Essay • Expository essays share many features with persuasive essays: • Introduction with hook, background, and thesis • Transitions between details and paragraphs • Formal style (typically, no “I” or “you”) • Conclusion with reworded claim, summary of evidence, and a so what

  3. What’s Different? • Evidence and details • Persuasive essays rely on clear, credible facts and quotes • Expository essays still use facts and quotes, but graphics, charts, and images can also be helpful. • Counter-claim • Persuasive essays give the opposite opinion and crush it. • Expository essays sometimes give a non-example (no crushing necessary).

  4. What’s Different? • Organization • Persuasive essays are typically organized order of degree • Expository essays can be effectively organized many ways: definition, classification, compare/contrast, chronological, cause and effect, etc. • Vocabulary • Persuasive essays often use “normal” vocabulary • Expository essays require you to use the terms that apply to what you are explaining or describing.

  5. You’ve Probably… • Written an essay on a theme in a book • Written an essay on a character in a book • Written a metaphor • Defined a term in a paragraph These are all expository writings!

  6. Practice Makes Perfect • Expository Essay One: Define Yourself—Past, Present, and Future • Who wereyou in previous years? • Whoare you this year? • Who do you wantto be?
