“Mother Jones”. Mary Harris Jones was called “the grandmother of all agitators”. Jones was born in Ireland Her family immigrated to the U.S. in 1835 Jones husband was a member of the Iron Molder’s Union In 1867 her husband and 4 children died of yellow fever. Tragedy Strikes Again.

  2. Jones was born in Ireland • Her family immigrated to the U.S. in 1835 • Jones husband was a member of the Iron Molder’s Union • In 1867 her husband and 4 children died of yellow fever

  3. Tragedy Strikes Again • The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 wiped out all of Jones’ possessions • She became involved with the Knights of Labor • Jones organized workers during strikes • She became an organizer for the United Mine Workers

  4. She helped found the Social Democratic Party • In 1903 she led children from the textile mill in Kensington, PA to President T. Roosevelt’s house in Long Island, NY to protest child labor • She was jailed in Trinidad, Colorado because of her work with the Ludlow Miner’s strike
