  1. (Philippians 4:11-13) • Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (NKJV)

  2. Philippians 4:11-13 The Paradox of

  3. Christianity is Not Stoic • (Romans 12:15) Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. (NKJV) • (Philippians 4:4) Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! (NKJV)

  4. The Scriptures Emphasize Contentment…With Wages • (Luke 3:14) • Likewise the soldiers asked him, saying, "And what shall we do?" So he said to them, "Do not intimidate anyone or accuse falsely, and be content with your wages." (NKJV)

  5. The Scriptures Emphasize Contentment…With Posessions • (1 Timothy 6:6-8) Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. (NKJV) • (Hebrews 13:5) Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." (NKJV)

  6. The Scriptures Emphasize Contentment…In Times of Adversity • (Acts 20:24) • "But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. (NKJV)

  7. Follow Christ’s Example • (1 Peter 2:21) • For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: (NKJV)

  8. Contentment Must Be Learned • (Luke 9:58) • And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head." (NKJV)

  9. Contentment Must Be Learned • (Luke 12:15) • And He said to them, "Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses." (NKJV)

  10. Paul Learned to Suffer Just as Christ Did • (2 Corinthians 11:23-27) • Are they ministers of Christ? --I speak as a fool--I am more: in labors more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequently, in deaths often. From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness-- (NKJV)

  11. Contentment Must Be Learned • (Philippians 4:7) and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (NKJV) • (Philippians 4:9) The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you. (NKJV)

  12. Contentment Must Be Learned • (Philippians 1:12) But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel, (NKJV) • (Philippians 1:18) What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached; and in this I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice. (NKJV) • (Philippians 4:4) Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! (NKJV)

  13. Do Not Be Content With Your Own Shortcomings • (Philippians 3:13) • Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, (NKJV)

  14. Do Not Be Content With Knowing That Others Suffer • (James 1:27) Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. (NKJV) • (James 2:15-16) If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, "Depart in peace, be warmed and filled," but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? (NKJV)

  15. Do Not Be Content With Knowing That Others Suffer • (Matthew 14:14) • And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick. (NKJV)

  16. Do Not Be Content Knowing Others Need the Gospel • (Romans 1:15) • So, as much as is in me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you who are in Rome also. (NKJV)
