  2. Overview • Every book explores different topics or themes. It is a reader’s interest in these topics that guides his reading. • Goal: select one topic to focus on while reading Anthem by Ayn Rand. • Choose the one you are most interested in, not the one your friends are most interested in.

  3. Big Idea #1 INDIVIDUALISM • the primary importance of an individual lies in self-reliance and independence • Concern for one’s own interests and well-being; a sense of self-importance • Unconcerned about what others think or do • Advocates freedom from government regulation in the pursuit of personal goals

  4. Big Idea #2 COLLECTIVISM • the primary importance of an individual lies in pursuits that benefit others • projects a sense of humility and selflessness. • Advocates for complete government regulation in the pursuit of societal goals

  5. Big Idea #3 CONFORMITY • actions and behaviors correspond with socially accepted standards, conventions, rules, and/or laws. • Obedience without question • Concern for everyone’s well-being and interests; a sense of humility and selflessness. • An advocate for freedom from or complete control via government regulation as long as everyone agrees.

  6. Big Idea #4 HERESY • One’s opinions, actions, and/or behaviors are opposed to socially accepted standards, conventions, rules, and/or laws. • Refusal or failure to conform • Concern for one’s own interests, well-being • Advocates for no government regulation in the pursuit of personal goals

  7. Big Idea #5 LOYALTY • A feeling or attitude of devoted attachment and affection. • Synonyms: faithful, fidelity, allegiance, patriotism • Antonyms: unfaithful, infidelity, disloyalty, traitor

  8. Big Idea #6 EQUALITY • The state or quality of being the same • Synonyms: sameness, parity, evenness • Antonyms: inequality, different, uniqueness

  9. Choice & Reflection • Choose the topic that interests you the most. • Refer back to the anticipation guide and review the statements • Put a $ next the statements you believe match your big idea. • Start thinking about all of the things you already know about your big idea • Start writing down the things you’d like to know about your big idea

  10. BIG IDEA Reflection Requirements: • Needs to be written in ink or typed. • Needs to include: • The reason why you selected your big idea • The statements from the anticipation guide you believe go with your big idea (pick at least 2) and explain your reasoning • What you already know about your big idea (life experiences, books, movies, etc.) • What you want to know about your big idea (including links to Anthem if there are any in chapter 1) • Be at least 10 sentences long. DUE DATE: ______________________
