Librarians are: • Teachers • Online tool developers • Partners in helping students understand the scientific communication cycle and develop the skills outlined in the student learning outcomes
Librarians as Teachers • Workshops for Researchers • RefWorks, EndNote, and Zotero • Web Tools for Working Collaboratively • Keeping Up: Web-Based Tools That Help You Work Smarter • Google for Researchers • Research Made Easy: Discover the Web of Science
Librarians as Teachers • Workshops for Graduate Students • Grant Funding for Graduate Students • Getting Published: How to Publish Your Science Research Article • Creating Effective Posters Using PowerPoint • Formatting Your Dissertation in Word 2007
Librarians as Teachers • Offer class sessions to support specific assignments (e.g., freshman seminars, Excel for engineers, engineering design) • Offer 8-week series for Summer Bridge students • Teach a one-credit course in the Chemistry Department on “Chemical Literature and Information Retrieval”
Librarians as Tool Developers • Assignment Calculator • CourseLib Pages • Online Tutorials • MyLibrary/MyU Portal • Groovy gadgets
Librarians as Partners Student Learning Outcomes in Direct Support of Scientific Communication: • Identify, define and solve problems • Locate and critically evaluate information • Communicate effectively • Acquire skills for lifelong learning

Librarians as Partners • Information literacy skills should: • Be integrated into meaningful, discipline-based assignments that connect students to what they will do as scientists/engineers • Scaffold throughout all four years of an undergraduate program • Be part of the curriculum to ensure that all students develop these skills
Librarians as Partners • What are the foundational skills that every student in the Institute of Technology should master? • Which foundational courses are most appropriate? Writing intensive? Project focused?
Librarians as Partners • What discipline-specific skills should students in each major develop sophomore, junior and senior years? Example: Mechanical Engineering • Which courses are most appropriate?
Librarians as Partners • Creating effective assignments • Break them down, scaffold • Can be short, and still develop key skills • See handout • Assignment Calculator • Online tutorials

Next Steps Invite your subject librarians to: • Meet with your department’s curriculum committee or DUG • Help map SLO’s to specific courses and develop information literacy learning objectives • Help develop assignments and learning objects (e.g., tutorials) that may be integrated into key aspects of the curriculum
Other Ideas • During career fairs and industry visits, ask employers to discuss the communication and information skills they seek in new hires • Survey co-op students and recent graduates about their professional development needs in the workplace
Other Ideas • Develop a certificate program that consists of a series of workshops/successful assignments that demonstrate information and communication skills • “3M Excellence in Scientific Communication Award” • Different certificates by discipline • Integrate tutorials/workshops with class assignments • “Add product to your portfolio” through Assignment Calculator • 1 credit class or extra credit in course
