VETERAN AND MILITARY POPULATION • Statewide • Number of veterans = 607,501 (*National Center for Veterans Analysis 9/2012) • Approximately 15% on disability pension • Number of military personnel =46,161 (*2009 census) • Military bases = 7 • SW Washington • Number of veterans = 54,187 (*National Center for Veterans Analysis 9/2012) • Number of military personnel = est. 6000+ • No military bases in the region
VETERAN’S TRANSPORTATION IN A UNIQUE REGION • Southwest Washington Region Encompasses • Clark, Skamania, Klickitat, Cowlitz and Wahkiakum • Borders Oregon • Veterans Administration/Medical • Vancouver and Portland • Rural communities = long trips & few transportation options
UNIQUE CHALLENGES • Connecting separate systems • Engagement of sufficient resources to provide services • Delivery systems; transit, private providers, VA • Cost sharing • Between programs, providers and states • Developing efficiencies through coordination • Building relationships to understand the “true” need

Unique Approaches & Solutions • Desire to support coordinated systems and provide resources • Veteran’s Transportation Resource Guide • Veteran’s Transportation and Community Living Initiative Grant • One-Call/One-Click Resource Center • Collaboration on outreach, resource/information sharing, assessment of needs • Collaboration on Transportation Scheduling System • Connecting separate systems; Ride Connections – Clearing House Project • Technology support for rural systems/small providers • Partnerships with the Veterans Administration and Veterans Transportation Services projects
Unique Approaches & Solutions Continued….. • Collaboration with Gorge Translink and transportation providers and systems/work towards common goal • WSDOT – Statewide Human Service Transportation Plan • Community solutions (ATCI); Mobility Management; Engagement of Volunteer Drivers • Partnering with agencies in other regions/states • Educating elected officials, funders, national, state and local program administrators
