Importance of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) in Mechanical Engineering
Computer-Aided Design (CAD) is the use of computer software to facilitate the generation, modification and optimization of a part or compilation of parts. -The use of Software to facilitate part design allows for a higher precision, a simpler and more accurate design iterations, and extensive documentation for the part and / or project management -(e.g. integration with a conventional BOM or BOM). -There are a number of vendors that provide CAD software available. -For Creative Mechanisms, we use Solidworks. Some of the advantages of CAD over traditional design and / or 3D modeling are the following:
CAD allows a simple and accurate automation and / or process modeling (known as Mechanical Design Automation). -Traditionally, MDA was not possible without first building a physical prototype of each part of the system and then assembling it to check the functionality. -The ability to digitally model and automate a prototype before it even creates a physical model increases the efficiency of manufacturing processes and cost savings.
CAD allows the ability to perform Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM). -For example, the Integration of CAD technology with CNC machines (Computer Numerical Control) or Additive manufacturing processes (3D printers), such as Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) machines.
-CAD takes material properties and interactivity characteristics between different materials into account. -CAD enables highly accurate dimension analysis and mathematical scalability using vector graphics technology (digital images based on mathematical formulas). -CAD provides high-precision component tolerance (much lower error margin between parts).
-CAD for Static Mechanical Design or mechanical Design Automation (MDA): one of the huge advantages of CAD software is the ability to automate the 3D images and to integrate different parts of the same product. -CAD for Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CNC & Additive Manufacturing): at Creative Mechanisms, we use a fully integrated software-hardware package that connects our Computer Aided Design software (Solidworks) and our heavy machinery -(two Single-tool CNC machines, a 16-tool CNC machine and an industrial-grade FDM machine or "3D printer") to each other.
-Advantage of a fully integrated system is that design iterations can be executed almost instantly, without having to download and reload everything every time you want to print an updated part. This is a small thing that makes a big difference when it comes to rapid prototyping productivity.
-CAD for manufacturing (injection molding automation): when it comes to mass production, there are many technologies that compete with injection molding. One of the most important things to analyze when planning for Injection Molding production are the Details of the molding flow -(the way in which molten plastic makes its way through the mold before solidifying into the mold of its part).
