Intasc Standard & Rationale • Standard: #7 Planning for Instruction • The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community content. • Name of Artifact: Health Education Lesson Plan • Date: April 15, 2014 • Course: EDUC 240 • Brief Description: For this assignment, I developed a health education lesson plan that documents the steps I will utilize as an educator when teaching health education to my students. In this lesson plan, I include national and state standards, goals/objectives, materials needed and method of instruction. Within the method of instruction, I detail how the lesson will be introduced, demonstrated, practiced and assessed. • Rationale: To document my understanding of Standard #7, Planning for Instruction, I selected to include my Health Education Lesson Plan because this assignment demonstrates by ability to plan a lesson for my students. This lesson plan also requires me to address different student’s abilities, while keeping the class on track. My knowledge of the curriculum and content areas are demonstrated in this lesson planning, as well.

Health Education Standards & Objectives • National Health Education Standard 7: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce risks. • Indiana Health Education Academic Standard3.7.2: Identify a healthy practice to maintain personal health and wellness. • Objectives: Students will wash their hands before meals and after using the restroom. Students use proper hand washing procedures. Students understand that germs can spread.

  5. Equipment & Materials • Glo-Germ (1 bottle) • 2 UV black lights • 2 Extension cords • soap • 2 Buckets (if limited access to a sink) • Paper Towels • Overhead projector/Computer/Flash-drive • Assessment Rubric (one per student)

  6. Preparation Checklist • Gather Equipment/materials (see list) • Set up black lights/extension cords • Check technology equipment • Check room darkening • Fill buckets w/ warm water

  8. Lesson Activity Hand washing is the most important step in preventing the spread of disease, but if hands aren’t washed properly you can still pass germs to others. Explain thatglo-germ lotion contains tiny pieces of plastic that glow under uV light. Today we’re pretending that these tiny particles in the lotion are bacteria or “germs”. Bacteria are single-celled organisms too small to be seen without a microscope. Bacteria are all around US.

  9. Explain we are going to see how quickly bad bacteria can spread. Ask students to close their eyes. Place a nickel-sized blob of Glow-Germ Lotion onto the right palm of three students and Ask Them to rub the lotion into both hands. Tell the class that when the timer begins they are to open their eyes, move around the room, and shake hands with as many different people as possible. After one minute, have students gather around the UV lights and view their ‘germs’. Model proper hand washing technique. Split the class in to two groups. Have one group wash their hands with soap and water, and the other group with water only. Return to UV lights and view results. Did you get all the germs off?

  10. Closing activity Conduct Think/Pair/Share Cooperative learning model on discoveries and conclusions.

Be a germ buster; Wash Your Hands! • Wet your hands with clean running water (warm or cold) and apply soap. • Rub your hands together to make a lather and scrub them well; be sure to scrub the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. • Continue rubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer?   12. Assessment Activity • Divide into predetermined groups • Groups will create and present their choice of: poem, song or rap, poster, cartoon or skit representing their understanding of how germs spread and proper hand washing procedures.

  14. Accommodations/Success for all • Carefully select groups so they represent a mixture of students from different Cultures, learning styles and abilities.
