One of the best opportunities for summer research in biological sciences is located in Cork, Ireland. University College Cork--Ireland’s leading research institute—hosts the UREKA summer program where students spend 12 weeks working in assigned projects that range from the fields of microbiology and molecular biology to biochemistry and pharmacy. Last summer I had the opportunity to work on a microbiology lab with great people in the beautiful scenery of Ireland and UCC. Cork City Centre UCC Campus: Quadrangle
I had about 20 other fellow inters from Ireland and abroad. The program provided each of us with the opportunity to work on an original project guided by university faculty and mentored by Ph.D. students from our labs. We took field trips to pharmacy industries, laboratories from the chemistry program and physics institute. We attended multiple workshops on career paths, scientific writing, computer skills, aseptic techniques, and technology showcases. As well, the program coordinators planned several socials events for us to get to know each other, our mentors, and faculty. All the events were a lot of and fun. I had a great time being part of the UREKA program. UREKA visit to GlaxoSmithKline UREKA Social – Dog track event
Everyone in the program, the labs, and the city was friendly and supportive. Cork is a beautiful small and cosmopolitan city with plenty of places to visit and things to do. My experience last summer was unforgettable; I made great friends and I acquired extraordinary research experience. I have a greater perspective of science and the world thanks to the UREKA program, and I encourage every motivated biology student to apply for the program. If you would like to get more information about the program, application process, or living in Ireland, please visit the following website http://ureka.ucc.ie/page2.html or send me an email cdams1@student.gsu.edu. The coordinators of the program Dr. Sally Cudmore and Dr. Cormac Gahan are very nice and supportive and they will be glad to answer any other question you may have ureka@ucc.ie Kinsale: The beach is 20 min from Cork City Birthday celebration in the lab
