In general, most comedies create everyday environments, and therefore the mise-en-scene is not unusual to the items seen in most people’s lives. However, mise-en-scene is an important feature of Slapstick comedies. For example, Items such as a table behind someone, can be carefully placed for one of the characters to accidently fall over. Setting Christmas is also a common time of year used as the extent for romance, and hilarity from the festive conventions make the story lines both heart warming, and ‘jolly’. Comedy Mise-en-scene Comedies are mainly based on the humorous dialogue, however, horror spoofs often use overly dramatic ambient, and non diegetic background music for comic effect. Sound Stereotypically ‘British’ people are usually the characters seen in popular rom-com’s. For example, Hugh Grants bumbling British character in Love Actually. Characters The soundtrack of a Comedy is often very upbeat. Songs featured in the film are usually well known, popular songs. The characters are normally everyday people, with over exaggerated quirks. This can be seen in the film Superbad from the Geeky characteristics of the main characters.
