  2. Introduction North East London Cardiovascular and Stroke Network • Welcome! • Purpose of the day • Further the understanding of stroke rehabilitation needs • Discuss commissioning quality stroke rehab services • Get us thinking of ways to achieve higher quality stroke rehab

Introduction North East London Cardiovascular and Stroke Network • Stroke rehabilitation is the only evidence based treatment for stroke recovery once the initial (72hr or so) medical intervention has ended • For those who survive a stroke, the recovery of neurological impairment takes place over a variable time span. About 30% of survivors will be fully independent within 3 weeks, rising to nearly 50% by 6 months

Introduction North East London Cardiovascular and Stroke Network • London has the opportunity to commission world class stroke rehabilitation and community services • The key outcome of stroke rehab is to improve patients quality of life, reduce disability and improve ability to participate in social engagement roles such as being a mum or being a worker

Introduction North East London Cardiovascular and Stroke Network • Rehabilitation needs to be stroke specialised, seamless and accessible • The National Stroke Strategy (particularly life after stroke) provides some key quality markers and the London stroke strategy operationalises these into specific services standards

  6. Introduction North East London Cardiovascular and Stroke Network • Commissioning quality rehabilitation services are likely to be cost saving to the health economy as care packages will be reduced, reduced secondary complications, increased quality of life and social engagement etc.

Introduction North East London Cardiovascular and Stroke Network Rehabilitation Headlines from 2008 National Sentinel Audit of Stroke Clinical Audit Report • 66% of appropriate patients to see an occupational therapist within 4 working days • 78% of patients have a cognitive assessment during their admission • 60% of incontinent patients have a plan for management of continence • 51% of appropriate patients have evidence that driving has been discussed
