1.4 In the ChipsUsing a Chip Model To solve a problem using a chip board: • Display 1st # of number sentence onto chip board. • Add or remove chips to represent 2nd # of number sentence. (if chips need to be removed from the board but their aren’t enough there, chips must be added in the form of zero pairs) • Remove the zero pairs from chip board. • The chips remaining on the board represent the answer. Negative 1 Red Chip + 1 Black Chip = a “Zero Pair” Positive http://connectedmath.msu.edu/CD/Grade7/Chip/index.html
1.4 Practice -3 + 5 = ? 3 1 Display 1st # of number sentence onto chip board. Remove the zero pairs from chip board. 4 2 The chips remaining on the board represent the answer. Add chips to represent 2nd # of number sentence.
1.4 Practice 2 + -5 = ? 3 1 Display 1st # of number sentence onto chip board. Remove the zero pairs from chip board. 4 2 Add chips to represent 2nd # of number sentence. The chips remaining on the board represent the answer.
1.4 Practice Subtract 2 -3 - -2 = ? 3 1 Since there are no zero pairs, -1 is the answer. Display 1st # of number sentence onto chip board. 2 Subtract chips to represent 2nd # of number sentence.
1.4 Practice -2 - -3 = ? 1 2b Display 1st # of number sentence onto chip board. Then, the 3 red can be subtracted. 3 2a Remove chips to represent 2nd # of number sentence. Only 2 chips are there, so 1 zero pair must be added. Since there are no zero pairs, one is the answer.
1.4 Practice Subtract 7 4 - 7 = ? 1 2b Display 1st # of number sentence onto chip board. Then, the 7 black can be subtracted. 3 2a Remove chips to represent 2nd # of number sentence. Only 4 chips are there, so 3 zero pairs must be added. Since there are no zero pairs, negative three is the answer.
1.4 Practice 1 2b Display 1st # of number sentence onto chip board. Then, the 3 red can be subtracted. 3 2a Remove chips to represent 2nd # of number sentence. Only 2 chips are there, so 1 zero pair must be added. Since there are no zero pairs, two is the answer.
