  1. The Always Best Connected (ABC) Servicefor Public Safety Rajesh.Mishra@ericsson.com Per.Johansson@ericsson.com Raymond. So @ericsson.com MESA10 San Diego, CA, USA April 14, 2005

  2. Introduction • From the joint Qualcomm-Ericsson CDMA technology presentations in MESA9 Meeting last October in France, two network topics were presented by Ericsson to support Project MESA initiatives • They are IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) as the CDMA core network, and Always Best Connected (ABC) for WLAN-CDMA connectivity • Ericsson would like to provide further information on Ericsson ABC concept to illustrate the capabilities and benefits of interoperability of CDMA and WLAN systems

  3. Introduction • The ABC MESH network is demonstrated to provide applications for emergency medical services and other public safety usage scenarios • An ABC MESH testbed provides an ad-hoc infrastructure for first responders in the WIISARD project (UCSD). • We believe that these concepts will provide capabilities “to develop MESA capabilities as a “system of systems” for communication between authorities and organizations, maximizing usage of existing communications technologies and infrastructures. Proposed MESA systems and capabilities will involve emergency communication scenarios where infrastructure exists and where it is nonexistent or exhausted.” – MESA News Release – 6th October, 2003

  8. ABC project at UCSD • Provide an experimental multi-access infrastructure... • To be used by research projects, such as WIISARD • Modified to fit different research projects • Development of new functionlity/capabilities as an outcome • Trigger research in a multi-access environment... • Find new applications or be utilized in exisiting applications • Functionality to provide adaptive behaviour • New network multiaccess mechanisms

Access 1 Cellular IP Transit Cellular “Content&Apps Network” Access 2 Network Computing Resources WLAN WLAN “ABC Server” Access n LAN “Service Network” LAN ABC MESH ABC MANET ABC MANET ABC Mesh Networking • Mesh network providing ABC connectivity to external networks • Discover and select mesh nodes that give the best external access • Provide extended access for legacy nodes

  10. Example: ABC Mesh Infrastructure • The ABC Mesh provides IP connectivity via nodes with cellular (wide area) access • The ABC Mesh nodes have WLAN AP functionlity • Legacy WLAN clients can connect to these nodes • Enables aggregation of external access capability Service Network 1 CDMA2000 Internet Connectivity Service Network 2 WCDMA Satellite Service Network n Legacy WLAN clients ABC Mesh Infrastructure

  11. ABC Mesh Infrastructure – Public safety context • Offers ad-hoc access capability for legacy WLAN clients in remote locations • Off-the-shelf equipment can be used by first responders • Cellular access connectivity can be shared • Capacity can be aggregated and/or made more robust • User devices may also be peer nodes in the ABC Mesh • Peer-to-peer communication between user devices possible
