Your first speech • Tuesday, January 1/29 • 2-4 Minutes (time reminders will be used) • Visual Aid - Object • Introduction Speech • Interesting facts? Event? Most important things? General overview? • Worth 50 points • Not expecting perfection!
Remember • Get your “feet wet” on our “stage” • Point out areas you need to focus on for future speeches • DO NOT WRITE OUT THE ENTIRE SPEECH! • Speech materials: handout/outline (most be typed), notecards (keywords only), object, and critique sheets • Looking for: • Extemporaneous delivery • Attempts strong delivery (e.g. good eye contact) • Attention getter, state purpose, memorable close • 2 to 3 main points • General purpose, specific purpose, central idea • Appropriate topic and object
Remember: • Absent = zero on speech • Critique sheets count as speech workshop • Late/miss slot = -5 off grade • Time penalties for speech 1 • Under/over 1 minute = -5 (-5 for each additional minute) • Under/over 59 to 30 seconds = -2 • Under/over 29 to 16 seconds = -1 • 15 second grace period
What to expect from your audience… • Audience analysis • Use this information as you create speech • Audience disposition? • Possible distractions? How to handle them? • Interest in the topic? • How can you get their attention?
Tips • Practice • Aim for middle range of time frame • Attire = appropriate; not “too casual” • Do not start with “Hi my name is….”; start with your attention getter • Practice • Make sure your object is visible • Arrive to class on time • PRACTICE (with your notecards and object; time yourself)
Also remember…. • Recap #1 next Thursday • Impromptus start next week; will fit in when we have time after each lecture/activity
Speech Workshop for Today • Audience centered speeches • In pairs—select a topic • Create a speech geared towards that audience • Consider their knowledge base, needs, disposition towards the topic • Consider appropriate language • Aim for a 2 minute speech • Take turns; form an intro, body, and conclusion • Try an attention getter
