Happy Hump Day • Please get out your 3x3. I will come around quick and check that you have these. Just keeping you accountable. Today’s outcomes • Creatively process and revise 3x3’s • Begin creating multiple theme statements
Theme homework • EACH member must come to class with MULTIPLE theme statements to share with the group tomorrow. If you completed your MWDS, what can you reuse or revise? EVERYONE MUST COME WITH 3! • How might you make use of your 3x3? • DO NOT go online for this assignment. You need to learn to think on your own! Going online is CHEATING! It’s okay if you come to class with less than perfection! It’s okay to come with a different perspective (but be able to prove it!!!) • Reread your chapter on theme. Make sure to use this as a guide as you construct your theme statements.
Some ideas on where to start… • Start with a High Concept Word/Phrase: A high concept word or phrase captures a profound idea. In many ways, these words and phrases are what make us distinctly human. • Examples: Courage, Love, Peer Pressure, Cooperation • Then expand on that word in your theme statements • Examples: Sometimes the most unlikely people show the greatest courage. Love can be just as destructive as hate. • Finally connect to the book: Ex. The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet shows that love can be just as destructive as hate.
“Where words fail, music speaks.”-Hans Christian Andersen • I am going to ask that you get a little creative with your 3x3’s. • Your job is to create a song using the statements you have created. Use the first few bars of any familiar song you would like such as: “Mary had a little lamb,” “Happy Birthday,” “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,” or anything you can think of. I’ve had kids rap things, too. • The goal is to get into a creative space to write your theme statements and to see if the language you are using makes any sense. If you need to tweak these to make them fit the song, go for it! • You will share your masterpiece with the class. You have 12 minutes to compose and practice. Don’t be a stick in the mud!
My Example “For he’s a jolly good fellow” • Prologue 3x3 • Darkness gives clarity. • Invisibility provides freedom. • Responsibility requires recognition. • Chapter 1 • Obedience equals treachery. • Reality destroys presuppositions. • Dreams give clarity.
