Othello analysis paper
In the beginning… • Review you outlines and talk to your group about the beginning of the play. • Create a separate chart for EACH ACT. Label the characters each time– this will be important later. • Now, look at your green words. Are there any you could add?
Perception vs. reality • Now go back through the charts. • Which words ACTUALLY DESCRIBE the characters? These are inferences YOU make based on their actions. Highlight those in pink. • Which words are PERCEPTION OF OTHERS with little factual basis? Highlight those in yellow.
jealousy • On your chart, go through each act separately; highlight the characters who are jealous in Green for the applicable acts(s). • Now look at your descriptors. If that descriptor was the result of jealousy, put a green “J” next to it.
Reason vs. emotion On your chart, go through each act separately. • Which characters are ruled by reason? BOX the characters who are ruled by REASON for the applicable acts(s). • Which characters are ruled by emotion? CIRCLE the characters who are ruled by EMOTION in the applicable acts.
CHOOSE • Which character could you most easily discuss/explain in an essay? • Which of our big ideas BEST fits your character? • YAY! Now you are ready to begin your essay.
Refining • Go back through your list for your chosen character. Put a “+” next to positive characteristics; put a “-” next to negative ones. • Is the character (or others perception of them) primarily negative or positive? • Choose THREE WORDS that you could discuss about this character. Have BOTH positive and negative words included.
Thesis development • Look at the three words you choose. • Make them all nouns. • Are they positive or negative? • You should have a 2-1 balance. (2 pos/ 1 neg or 2 neg/ 1 pos) • Start with the singleton (the one you only have ONE of). That will go in the first clause of your thesis. • The other two will go in the 2nd clause • Now, craft an “Although…” statement about your character using your green words • Example: “Although George shows frustration with Lennie, his deep sense of loyalty and compassion compel him to protect his friend.
