  1. Beaker filled with water Cell (greatly enlarged) floating in the water Is this a plant or an animal cell? How can you tell? This is an animal cell. It does not have a thick cell wall.

  2. 85% water 78% water Which way will the water move? Water will move into the cell = from high to low concentration This is diffusion AND osmosis.

  3. 3% ions 1% ions Which way will the ions (Cl-, Na+, K+) move? Ions are small enough to move through the membrane by diffusion (from high to low concentration). However, because of their charge they do not move freely through the lipid bilayer.

  4. 5% proteins 15% protein Which way will the protein move? Protein would move out of the cell from high to low if it wasn’t a MACROmolecule. Because of its size, it cannot move across the membrane except by exocytosis/endocytosis.

  5. 4% nucleic acids 7% N.A. Which way will the nucleic acids move? Nucleic acids would move out of the cell from high to low if they weren’t MACROmolecules. Because of their size, they cannot move across the membrane except by exo/endo- cytosis.
