  4. ‘Understanding’ questions Aberdeen has benefited greatly from the oil boom which started in the 1970s. The car park of Union Street’s chrome and glass shopping mall is awash with new 4X4s. People are tanned. Not sunbed tanned. Tanned as in two weeks in Goa tanned. The street furniture is fresh and well maintained. There is no peeling paint or rusted spots on benches or lampposts. Aberdeen’s success speaks for itself.

Beyond the almond orchards were fields of pomegranates, pistachios, grapes and apricots. Somewhere in th distance were almost two million dairy cows, producing six billion dollar’s worth of milk a year.
