Task 6: Know the Sequence Place the following events in chronological order (the order in which they occurred from first to last): • Cherry tells Ponyboy that she secretly likes Dally. • Ponyboy wishes he lived someplace else. • Ponyboy learns he and Cherry have something in common. • Cherry reveals Socs are “cool to the point of not feeling anything.” • Ponyboy realizes what separates Greasers from Socs. • Ponyboy tells Cherry what he thinks of Darry. • Ponyboy reveals that Soda had a horse.

  2. What is Plot? • Plot is the organized pattern or sequence of events that make up a story. Every plot is made up of a series of incidents that are related to one another.

  3. What is Conflict? • Conflict is the struggle between opposing forces in a story.

  4. Conflict There are 4 (four) different kinds of conflict a person can face: • 1. Character vs. Character • 2. Character vs. Nature • 3. Character vs. Society • 4. Character vs. Themselves

  5. Character vs. Character • A character in the story has a problem with another character in the story.

  6. Character vs. Character • Physical fight • Verbal fight • Good vs. Evil Example: • Superheroes fighting off the villain. Now you think of an example…

  7. Character vs. Nature • When the character faces a problem that is with nature; it is beyond anyone’s control. Can you think of an example?

  8. Character vs. Nature • Blizzard Examples: The Wizard of Oz • Flood The Perfect Storm • Storm Titanic • Landslide • Avalanche • Animal attack • Tornado • Hurricane • Ocean troubles

  9. Character vs. Society • When a character has a problem with society as a whole. • If society is stopping someone from reaching their goal.

  10. Character vs. Society • Gay marriage • Inter-racial marriage • Racism • Prejudice • Religion • Political reasons • War • Examples: Brokeback Mountain, Hotel Rwanda, the 1960s counterculture, Civil Rights, Avatar

  11. Character vs. Self • If the character is not reaching their goal because of an inner conflict/struggle within themselves.

  12. Character vs. Self • Some moral struggle. • When you want to do something but you hold yourself back.

  13. External vs. Internal Conflict • The four types of conflict can be labeled as either external conflict or internal conflict. • External = outside of yourself (outside force) • Internal = inside of yourself (inside force)

  14. External vs. Internal Conflict • Guess if the conflict is external or internal: • Character vs. Character  external • Character vs. Nature  external • Character vs. Society  external • Character vs. Themselves  internal

Conflict & Plot in The Outsiders • Create a poster board booklet containing conflict and plot information from chapters 3 and 4. • Arrange the events in chronological order on the left side. • Determine which conflict each event is most closely connected to. • Place the events under the appropriate conflict heading on the right side.

  20. Writing Assignment • Write one paragraph that answers the following prompt: • What do you think will happen in chapter 5? What do you think the next major event in the plot will be? What new conflict do you think will be introduced in chapter 5?
