Warning Signs of Suicide • Sudden change in behaviour (positive or negative) • Withdrawal • change in eating patterns • Unusual preoccupation with death or dying • Giving away valued personal possessions • Signs of depression; moodiness, hopelessness • One or more previous suicide attempts • Recent attempt or death by suicide by a friend or a family member
Verbal Signs • "I can't go on anymore“ • "I wish I was never born“ • "I wish I were dead“ • "I won't need this anymore“ • "My parents won't have to worry about me anymore“ • "Everyone would be better off if I was dead“ • "Life sucks. Nobody cares if I live or die"
Who is at a higher risk? Teenagers : • who have attempted suicide previously • with little self-esteem • in trouble with the law • who are suffering from depression • who have been abused, molested, or neglected
Who is at a higher risk? • who abuse drugs and/or alcohol • who are perfectionists • who are struggling with sexual orientation • who are in dysfunctional families • who fail in school-potential dropouts

Prevention Scenarios • Each group will be presented with a scenario • In your groups decide on a recorder who will write down the ideas of the group • In point form • Please indicate the title of the scenario on the top of your page along with each group member’s names. • Identify the warning signs and the verbal signs • The group will work together to come up with possible prevention strategies that could be used or could have been used • The group work is to be handed in at the end of the period
