What is ELEP ? A clinical based programme providing a unique learning opportunity for the staff of the two participating NHS Trusts
The History of ELEP • As a result of a number of national policies and initiatives • Originally, only open to qualified nurses • Programme agreed in 2006 by Directors of Nursing, EKHT & KMPT
Why? • Up to 50% of patients in acute hospitals have mental health problems • Older adults with mental health problems have increased complex physical health needs • Need to avoid unnecessary admissions and reduce length of hospital stay
What Happens? • Member of staff recognizes skills gap and discusses this with their manager • Attend a 1 day induction session • 6 day trans-Trust experience designed to reflect individual needs
The Induction Day • Aims & Objectives • Local governance issues • Basic skills required for experience • Common conditions & their symptoms • Safety & Risk • Law & Ethics • Placement mapping including mentors
The Experience Acute Medicine to Mental Health A combination of older & younger age adult services including home treatment team plus other areas individually tailored to meet the needs of the participant.
What’s Expected? • Complete a workbook designed for them to get the most out of their experience • Share their knowledge and experience with their host placement • Provide feedback on their experiences and preparation • Take back their newly gained knowledge and share that with their own team

Main Objectives For Mental Health Staff To foster a better understanding of physiological problems and relevant diagnostic tests. To improve knowledge, confidence and management skills in caring for patients with chronic medical conditions (e.g. metabolic syndrome, diabetes, CCF, COPD, or other age related diseases)
Main Objectives For Staff in Acute Hospitals • To foster better understanding of mental health conditions and their relation to the physical presentation and reporting of illness or injury • To improve knowledge, confidence and management skills needed for mental health conditions (e.g. appropriate therapies, risk of suicide or confused patients)
