WHAT IS PHONETICS? Phonetics is the study of the study of the production, perception, and physical properties of speech sounds It is concerned with how speech sounds are generated in the human vocal tract, why they are different to a listener, and how a listener is able to recognize them. It also deals with actual and physical characteristics of sounds; for example, how different or similar clear [l] and dark [] are in English, how different or similar initial [t] as in top and [t] after [s] as in stop are, etc.
We speak when we exhale. This means that air comes out when we speak. • Do we speak when we exhale or when we inhale? • What moves in and out in respiration. • Where does the air move out? What is the source of the air? Air moves in and out. The air moves out from the lungs. So, the source of the air is the lungs.
