  2. Bayu, an Indonesian student in Tallahassee, just bought a new digital camera. He loves to photograph anything. Because of his hobby, he is appointed to prepare pictures for a new website and monthly electronic journal for Indonesian Students Association in Tallahassee. As much as he is excited with this assignment, Bayu is still not satisfied with the quality of the pictures he had taken. He wants to capture all of the activities perfectly with his camera. He really wants to know how to make a good picture that he could be proud of. Bayu wants to take a photography course, but he has time conflicts with his study schedule. He talked with us about that and we agreed to help him, since we know enough

  3. ? You probably have the same problem with Bayu and want to learn how to take good pictures. You see, having a good camera is not enough to make a good picture. We showed Bayu a good pictures and we discussed how to produce these kind of pictures.

  4. To make a good picture, you have to learn about several concepts, such as rule of third, simplicity, form, balance, color, and framing to make interesting images. After you learn all about that, you could learn about how to use different lighting to give an impressive effect on your pictures. However you have to decide your point on interest first.

  5. Point of interest • To spot good subjects to photograph, you must take a fresh look at things around you. You will see a lot of interesting subjects or points of interest that will look good on pictures. • Point of interest or focal point in photography is a subject that we feel will be very attractive to be photographed. In this case, before we take a picture, we have to imagine whether or not that image catch other people’s attention.

  6. Point of interest • Even though this picture is nice, but can you tell what actually the point interest is. This is a perfect example of bad choice of point of interest. In this picture, you cannot tell which one is the point of interest, the building or persons.

  8. Composition To make a picture with the right composition, you have to learn about several concepts. • Rule of thirds • Simplicity • Framing • Lighting

  9. Rule of thirds The first concept you should know is rule of thirds. Basically it is where you should place your subject in the camera frame. Usually, we put the subject in the center of the frame. But, don’t think that your main subject always has to be in the center – this can produce a dull picture.

  10. Rule of thirds Imagine your picture area divided into thirds, both horizontally and vertically. The imaginary circles suggest four options for placing your subject to make good composition. The option you select depends upon the subject and how you would like that subject to be presented.
