What are they • What we use to fasten structures together • Structures are often weakest where they are joined together • 2 Main types: • Mobile and Rigid
Mobile joints • Hold parts together while still allowing movement • Must have some form of lubricant so that they move smoothly • Examples: • Door hinges • Elbows • Pins in a bicycle chain • Other examples
Rigid Joints • Fix and object into place; joint that allows no movement • Most rigid joints fit into 5 categories • Fasteners • Interlocking Shapes • Ties • Adhesives • Melting
Fasteners • Nails • Screws • Rivets • The holes these fasteners make weaken the materials they fasten. • More fasteners, make a more rigid joint… more holes • Kind and number must be carefully planned • Other examples?
Interlocking shapes • Using carefully shaped parts to hold themselves together • Examples: • Wooden Drawers • Folded seams in clothing • Other examples?
Ties • Threads • String • Ropes • Used to fasten things together (usually flexible materials) • Ideas where we use/see ties as joints?
Adhesives • - Sticky substances that when they harden it locks the pieces together • Creates a bridge between two surfaces and locks them together • Thermosetting glues harden as they cool (ex. Hot glue gun) others are solvent based meaning they dry out to harden. • Super glue goes through a chemical reaction to bond pieces together • Problems: • May fail if they get wet or are in a hot climate • Health hazard: sticking fingers together, powerful chemicals into the air
Melting • Pieces of metal or pieces of plastic can me melted together • Welding: melts pieces to themselves • Soldering: surrounds piece with a different melted material • Pieces must be carefully cleaned before joining, and it must be cooled slowly • Other ways to melt materials? Examples of Melted joints
