Purpose of the Study Identify the factors that predict a client’s risk of nursing home placement.
The Study • The study covered clients who received either case management, home care, social adult day care, or meals on wheels between January 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009. • 1,272 clients with usable data
Descriptive Statistics • A majority of the clients were female (68.2%) and white (96.5%). • Nearly two-thirds (60%) of the clients lived alone.
Descriptive Stats Continued • The most frequent age range is between 80 and 89 (46.4%), with about the same number of 70 to 79 year old clients (23.7%) as 90 to 99 year old clients (19.8%).
Survival Time • The time from start of service until the client leaves our care for a nursing home placement.
Survival Time • Average survival time for Broome County clients receiving case management, home care, SADC, or meals on wheels between January 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009 was 13.1 Months. • Nursing home placement rate 5.2% or 66 clients during study period.
Risk Factors for NH Placement • Age: Every year above age 60 raises chance of placement by 8.2%
Risk Factors for NH Placement • IADL: Every additional IADL raises chance of placement by another 30%. • Dementia: The presence of dementia raises the risk of placement by 77.8%. • And one where we have some doubt: Case Management Hours Per Month: Every additional hour of case management raises the risk of placement by 25.7%.
