  2. Role of Masks • Although once used in religious ceremonies, today Igbo masks have largely secular roles. • Masks and ceremonies where masks are worn represent human life, activities, and nature.

  3. Two Major Forms • Light Masks represent females, dark masks represent males. They idealize female beauty and male aggressiveness, al- though this is largely symbolic as the masks rarely are seen together. It is only over the course of the masking season that a viewer will see both forms.

  4. Qualities of Igbo Masks • Female: Light Beauty, Purity Village, Safety Daytime Order, Clarity Peace, Calm

  5. Qualities of Igbo Masks • Male: Dark, Ugliness, Wilderness, Night, Chaos, Obscurity Mystery, Danger, Conflict

  6. Ijele Masks: One HUGE Mask • Called “Great Spirit” or “Elephant” this mask maybe 16-18 ft high and 7-8 ft wide. It weighs up to 200 lbs, but is worn by one man. Traditionally it it used in the funeral of an extremely high- ranking man.
