The impact • Feinstein Foundation Challenge Against Hunger 2012 • Raised awareness among Greek organizations at George Washington University, Howard University, University of Maryland, and American University • Sandwich drive event • Spiritual organizations • Contacted local churches, hoping to become beneficiaries of donations in kind • DC Homeless Children’s Playtime Project • Wrote proposal for collaboration between Thrive DC and DCHCPP • Setting up children’s area on floor of Thrive DC
What did we get out of it? • Interpersonal communication – applying abstract concepts learned in class to real world situations • Conflict resolution • Being wary of other people’s perceptions • Communication in different mediums • Cold calling • Proposal writing • Emailing • Day-to-day clerical tasks • Speaking with community members, co-workers, and superiors
Application of lessons • Importance of taking initiative • Understanding of how to apply classroom knowledge to the real world • Through practical application, we also improved our communication skills • Knowledge of what is going on, outside the “GW Bubble” • Exposure to potential career paths
