What is Classroom Assessment • Using assessment techniques to Learn about Student Learning • "Classroom Assessment is a simple method faculty can use to collect feedback, early and often, on how well their students are learning what they are being taught.” ----Angelo, T.A., 1991. Ten easy pieces: Assessing higher learning in four dimensions. In Classroom research: Early lessons from success. New directions in teaching and learning (#46), Summer, 17-31.
How Does Assessment Differ? • Assessment in that it is aimed at course improvement • The primary goal is to better understand your students' learning in an effort to improve teaching
Benefits of Classroom Assessment – For Faculty • Provides short-term feedback about day-to-day teaching/learning • Provides useful information about student learning with a much lower investment of time • Helps foster good rapport with students • Encourages teaching as a formative process
Benefits of Classroom Assessment – For Students • Students become monitors of their own learning • Lessens feelings of anonymity • Illuminates needed study skills • Demonstrates instructor cares about student learning
Steps for Conducting Classroom Assessment • Decide what you want to learn from a classroom assessment. • Choose a Classroom Assessment Technique (CAT) that provides this feedback, is consistent with your teaching style, and can be easily implemented • Explain the purpose of the activity to students, then conduct it (inform students if results will be used as part of their grades) • Review the results and decide what changes, if any, to make • Let students know what you learned and how you will use this information
