IONIC and COVALENT BONDS An Ionic bond will take away electrons from another atom. However, in a covalent bond the atoms will share electrons with each other. In an ionic bond there will be a bond with a metal atom and a nonmetal atom. In a Covalent bond two nonmetal atoms will bond.
Which types of bonds are most common? Covalent bonds tend to be more common than ionic bonds because most atoms need eight electrons to complete their outermost shell. There are more atoms that need eight more electrons, than atoms that have complete electrons.
Ionic bonds SYMBOLWORD LiBr Lithium Bromide NH4+ Ammonium
Ionic bonds: examples Lithium Bromide: Li + Br + LiBr- Lithium will become positive since it gave away an electron. Bromide will become negative because it took one electron more. Ammonium: The symbol for ammonium will then become NH4+
Covalent bonds • SYMBOLWORD • NO2 Nitrogen Oxide • CO2 Carbon Dioxide
Covalent bonds: examples • CO2: • The carbon atom will share electrons with the oxygen since they are both looking for eight electrons. Together it will make carbon dioxide. • PCL3: • The Potassium Chloride is a covalent bond because it will share electrons with each other.
Valence electrons • Valence electrons are related to the bonds because the atoms will want their outermost most shell to be completed with eight electrons. • In an ionic bond the atom will take away electrons to complete it outermost shell. • A covalent bond will share electrons in order for both atoms to get eight electrons in their outermost shell.
Covalent bonding t-shirt • COP would an example of a covalent bond since Carbon, Phosphorus, and Oxygen are missing electrons in their outermost shell and they would be sharing. • :C:O:P: • POP will also be a covalent bond in which there would be two phosphorus atoms and one oxygen making he word pop. • These examples and the periodic elements can be used to make a t-shirt because the elements of the periodic table can be used to make words. People like unique items and they will certainly be interested in these t-shirts.
