SOLID TO LIQUID • MELTING: thechange in statefrom a solidto a liquid. • MELTING POINT: thetempeture at wich a substancechangesfrom a solidto a liquid. • At itsmeltingpoint, theparticlesof a solidsubstance are vibrating so fastthattheybreack free fromtheirfixedpositions.
LIQUID TO SOLID • FREEZING: thechange os statefromliquidtosolid. • At itsfreezingtempeture, theparticlesof a liquid are moving so slowlythattheybegintoform regular patterns. • Example: liquidwaterinto a freezer, thewaterloosesenergytothe cold air in thefreezer.Just a fewhours in freezer andtheliquidbecomessolid.
LIQUID TO GAS • Liquids can vaporize in twoways. • VAPORIZATION: thechangefromliquidto gas. • Vaporizationtakes place whentheparticles in a liquidgainenoughenergytoform a gas. • Vaporizationthattakes place onlyonthesufaceof a liquidiscalled EVAPORIZATION. • BOILING: occurswhenliquidchangesto gas belowitssurface as well as at thesurface. • BOILING POINT: tempeure at whichliquidboils.
SOLID TO GAS • SUBLIMATION: occurswhenthesurfaceparticlesof a solidgainenoughenergythattheyform a gas. • Duringsublimationparticlesof a solid do not pass throughtheliquidstate as theyform a gas. • Example: Solidcarbon-dioxidecalled “dry-ice” sublimates, itchangesdirectlyinto a gas. • Insteadofmeltingthesolidcarbondioxideitbecomesdirectly gas.
CONDENSATION • CONDENSATION: itistheoppositeofvaporization. • Condensationoccurswhenparticles in a gas lose enoughthermalenergytoform a liquid. • You can notseewater vapor. Water vapor is a colorless gas thatisimpossibletosee. • Example: Cloudstypicalyformwhenwater vapor in theatmospherecondensessintoliquiddroplets.
