Purpose • The goal of this lab is to acclimate you to the lab setting and to give you an opportunity to begin cooperating with your group members. • You also will need to familiarize yourself with the levels of precision of which any individual instrument is capable.
Precision • Precision is the level of detail that can be represented mathematically by a measuring device. • Precision varies on different instruments. • For a ruler it is 0.05cm. • For a protractor it is 0.5°.
Height (m) 0 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Age (yr) 1 Interpolation vs. Extrapolation • Interpolation is the act of estimating a quantitative value that is located between two known points. • Extrapolation involves making use of a known pattern of data and extending to unknown points. • Which of these will you do in this lab?
Your Report • This lab is classified as informal. • On your next lab day, you will be required to turn in the following items with your report at the beginning of class: • The lab sheet, fully and neatly completed. If extra space is needed to answer the questions, please attach a piece of lined paper. • Graph paper containing the fully completed and labeled drawings of your triangles. • This lab is worth 20 points.
