What is a FACT? • A fact is something you can prove to be true. • It is something you can look up in a book or see with your own eyes. • Some facts will never change: Thanksgiving is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November. • Some facts will change: This year we went to Aunt Melba’s for Thanksgiving.
What is an OPINION? • An opinion is the way a person feels or thinks. • It is something you CANNOT prove or look up in a book. • EXAMPLE: I really love eating turkey on Thanksgiving. The turkey doesn’t agree! That’s what makes the sentence an OPINION!
Let’s see if you can determine if the statement you’re given is a FACT or an OPINION.
FACT or OPINION? The first Thanksgiving was celebrated in the year 1621. FACT 1621 is the date of the first Thanksgiving!
FACT or OPINION? Cranberry jelly is tastier than mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving dinner. OPINION Some people might prefer mashed potatoes.
FACT or OPINION? Pilgrims wore beautiful three piece outfits and felt hats. OPINION Not everyone would agree that they were beautiful.
FACT or OPINION? Wampanoag Indians taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. FACT Before that, the Pilgrims had difficulty surviving!
FACT or OPINION? The first Thanksgiving was too long. It went on for three days. OPINION Some people would like to celebrate it for three days.
FACT or OPINION? The Pilgrims sailed on the ship, known by the name Mayflower. FACT The Mayflower was the name of the Pilgrim’s ship.
FACT or OPINION? The best part of Thanksgiving is breaking the turkey wishbone for good luck. OPINION Some people don’t like to break the wishbone.
FACT or OPINION? The first Thanksgiving was celebrated by the Pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians. FACT They did celebrate the first Thanksgiving!

1. The annual Macy’s Day Thanksgiving day parade started in the 1920’s. 2. Parades are fun to watch with your family. 3. Parades are the best part of the Thanksgiving holiday. Find the FACT!
1. The heaviest turkey ever raised was 86 pounds. 2. An adult turkey has around 3,500 feathers. 3. Turkeys make a funny gobble sound. Find the OPINION!
1. Thanksgiving was made a national holiday in 1941. 2. Thanksgiving is the greatest holiday, since you get to eat good food. 3. Pilgrims were very unintelligent since they did not know how to farm. Find the FACT!
