Go to EVERY class • You’ll be more connected • Get to know the instructor and make sure they know you • Get what you pay for
Do your part • Learn to adapt quickly to instructors • Be prepared for class – read, complete assignments, and TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF by exercising, eating, and sleeping • Sit in the front …it’s not nerdy! • Be a good group member • Get there on time…better yet, be early • Participate in class – instructors will notice • Communicate with your instructors – ask questions, go to office hours, talk to them if you’re having problems in and/or outside the class
Active learning • Know how you learn best • Know what doesn’t work for you • Set goals & prioritize • Ask questions • Study with peers • Take notes that make sense to you & go over them right after class • Don’t cram!
Note-Taking Practice active listening Note taking = focus Process information as you write it down – it’s only helpful later if it makes sense to you Listen for important points your instructor will repeat, emphasize and give other verbal cues Make them logical & legible Go over them after class to reinforce the material Get notes from a classmate if you miss a class – don’t be shy about asking them to clarify information
Remember, we’re here to support you… • Meet with or talk to your TRiO counselor at least once each month during the semester • Talk to one of us before you’re overwhelmed • Academics • Personal life
