How to Steer Clear of Cancer: Smoking Cigarette smoking is the major cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. • Lung cancer is the #1 cause of cancer death • 87% of lung cancers are related to cigarette smoking • Men who smoke are 23 times more likely to develop lung cancer and women who smoke are 13 times more likely • 157,200 people died of lung cancer in 2003 • Smoking is linked to lung cancer as well as esophageal cancer, bladder cancer, and head and neck cancer
