WP 13THEMATIC & ASSEMBLYCENTRE for OCEAN COLOUR MyOcean2 First Annual Meeting – Cork /16-17 April 2013 MyOcean2 First Annual Meeting – 17-18 April 2013
OCTAC Main Objectives • To meet the strong demand for more accurate OC products at regional scale, especially in the coastal area (Case II turbid waters), via best offshore (Case I) and coastal (Case II) algorithm combination; • OCTAC streamlining via system architecture and service provision simplification; • to consolidate and reinforce the MyOcean OCTAC system and service in terms of operation, service capacity, product quality, routine validation; • to ensure production, archiving and dissemination d of global, Pan-European, regional (ROOS) products as defined in the MyOcean Catalogue MyOcean2 First Annual Meeting – 17-18 April 2013

System Evolution • Objectives were/are • OCTAC streamlining via system architecture and service provision simplification, compatibly with the fact that the OC signal is influenced by complex and heterogeneous water properties, thus making streamlining challenging. • Conversion from 5 PUs (ACRI, CNR, IFREMER, PML, JRC) to 3PUs (ACRI, CNR, PML) by merging the IBI and NWS into a unique Atlantic production system • OCTAC conversion to one Dissemination Unit distributing all the regional and global products; • Implementing change to OCTAC System architecture minimising the impact on the production and to the users • Implementing the relevant developments made in OC S&T and in MyOcean Tier-1 S&T WP into the operational OCTAC processing chains • Update the processing chains taking into account new OC sensors (VIIRS, S3,...) MyOcean2 First Annual Meeting – 17-18 April 2013

System Evolution • Main achievements are • Update of OC MODIS-Aqua regional Processing chains to allow the new calibration for MODIS Aqua to be operationally implemented. • OC system architecture simplification: • decrease N° of OC PUs from 5 to 3. • decrease N° of OC DU from 3 to 1 • All the global and regional products distributed by a single OCTAC DU since MyOcean V2.2 without impact to the dissemination and to the users • Development of the New Atlantic and Arctic L3 OC processing chains • Development of the New Atlantic and Global L4 OC processing chains • Update the MED and BS L4 processing chains • Update of the OCTAC DU : • 1) re-organization of OC product catalogue and dataset; • 2) new configuration of the interfaces • Main difficulties encountered • Re-organization of OCTAC DU was no simple and implied several updates • The split of ATL production between PML (L3) & ACRI (L4) MyOcean2 First Annual Meeting – 17-18 April 2013
Production Evolution: objectives • R&D Objectives were • To develop a single Atlantic Ocean product suite (including NWS, IBI regions) • To develop Baltic Sea and Black Sea regional products • To develop/improve OC coastal parameter estimates merging of Case I (open ocean) and Case II (coastal) algorithms into a single product; • To develop/improve multi (or single)-sensor OC L4 products with no data gaps via updated/new OI or EOF methods and uncertainty estimates (Cal/Val); • To develop a new European Seas product based on regional products; • Update the production taking into account new OC sensors (VIIRS, S3,...) • Loss of EnviSAT Terra, VIIRS (and Sentinel-3, when will be available) (HIGH priority) • Production operational change were • Merge the IBI+NWS products into the ATL suite to eliminate discontinuity problems occurring at regional boundaries • Produce OC L4 products with no data gaps via updated/new OI or EOF methods (all regions: GLO, ATL, MED, BS, BAL) • Re-organize the OC catalogue in order to facilitate the selection of the products to the users MyOcean2 First Annual Meeting – 17-18 April 2013
