NSF Funding Opportunities • In 2010-2011 NSF initiated a series of five Climate Research Investment Solicitations • one focused on Decadal and Regional Climate Prediction using Earth System Models • co-sponsored by NSF, USDA and DOE at $60M total • several funded projects on climate extreme modeling and impacts in applications sectors, including agriculture and water resources • Beginning in FY 2012, NSF will expand the Science, Engineering, and Education for Sustainability (SEES)portfolio (growing from $337M to over $998M) through significant investments that: • continue the integration, responsiveness, andeffectiveness of ongoing programs; • emphasize research and education on Sustainable Energy Pathways(SEP) • institute a formal program of Postdoctoral Fellowships in Sustainable Solutions; • initiate aprogram of interdisciplinary Sustainability Research Networks (SRNs) linking existing and new nodes; and • include international connections through targeted awards in the Partnerships for InternationalResearch and Education (PIRE) program. • Announcement under development/review; anticipate a Fall release; check SEES webpage: http://www.nsf.gov/geo/sees/
NOAA Funding Opportunities • NOAA Climate Program Office is planning its FY12 Announcement of Federal Funding Opportunitywhich will likely invite proposals that address some of the societal challenges identified in NOAA's Next Generation Strategic Plan: • Changes in Extremes of Weather and Climate; • Climate Impacts on Water Resources; and • Coasts and Climate Resilience. • The NOAA FFO could include competitions related to: • climate data set development and diagnostics with a focus on extremes; • climate change detection and attribution of extremes; • improving climate model simulation and prediction of extremes over North America; • climate-related impacts on water resource planning; • NOAA's Coping with Drought Initiative in support of the National Integrated Drought Information System; and • influence of climate variability and change, including extremes, on the coastal built environment. • Announcement under development/review; anticipated release end of June-early July; check CPO webpage: http://www.cpo.noaa.gov
