  7. A Watts local car enters the Pacific Electric elevated terminal at 6th & Main Streets in downtown L.A. in the 1950s. The El Rey Hotel is the large building in the distance with the roof sign.

  8. Venice Short Line train in the late '40s, havingjust departed from the surface tracks on the south side of the Subway Terminal Building. Note the Town theater and the Clark Hotel across the street from the Subway Terminal.

  9. The theater on the northwest corner was originally the PantagesTheater, bought by Warner Brothers in the '40s to exhibit its product. The 8-story building housing the theater was built by Alexander Pantages in 1919.

  10. A narrow street, usually free of autos (90%of the residents of Bunker Hill did not own automobiles), between Olive and Hill was Clay Street, lined with numerous Victorian era buildings. The following photo looks up Clay Street from 4th Street.

  13. For the next mile our train runs on streettrackage in Glendale Boulevard, from Beverly Boulevard to Sunset Boulevard, passing Echo Park on the right.

  14. Midway in this section of the line you will get a spectacular view as the line crosses a high bridge over Fletcher Drive.

  18. Wow! Television - The 'magic box' became a great medium for hawking toys, especially on Saturday morning kids shows and around the holidays. But TV offered entertainment for everyone. In late 1947, Howdy Doody and Kukla, Fran and Ollie appear on screen. The announcer for Kukla, Fran & Ollie is a young unknown named Hugh Downs. Ed Sullivan's Toast of the Town, Candid Camera and Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts all debut in 1948. In 1949, new TV shows include Hopalong Cassidy, The Lone Ranger and I Remember Mama. Beat the Clock is one of the new programs for the 1950 season; 7,464,000 TV sets are sold in 1950 at an average price of $300. A children's show, "Life With Snarky Parker," debuts; it only lasts 8 months but the director, Yul Brynner, shaves his head and moves on to fame as an actor. In 1951, The Roy Rogers Show, I Love Lucy and Mr. Wizard commence. Ozzie and Harriet debut in '52. New shows for 1953 include The Life of Riley and The Danny Thomas Show.

The Average Family income was $4,421with men earning $3,400 and Woman $1,100Sounds like a little but look at what you could buy with that money:Bacon was 66¢ a lb. Bread was only 18¢ a lb. can you believe?A Chuck Roast was 50¢ a lb. and Coffee was 93¢ per lb.Eggs were 61¢ doz. and flour was 54¢ a lb. & Margarine was 29¢ a lb.Milk was 46¢ for a 1/2 gal. and Oranges were 53¢ a doz.Pork Chops were 79¢ a lb. and a 10 lb. bag of Potatoes was only 56¢Sugar was 52¢ for a 5 lb. bag and Tomatoes were only 15¢ a can.Woman's Clothing: Bra $3.95, Girdle $4.95, Nylons $1.00Baby Food (4 jars) 87¢, Bath Towel 95¢, Baseball Glove $9.95,Camera Film 43¢, Cat Food (3 8-oz. cans) 39¢,Chocolate Cherries (13 oz. box) 55¢, Flashlight Battery 14¢,Home Permanent $1.50, Lipstick 49¢, Electric Washing Machine $69.95

Important Historic and Cultural Events 1950 - President  Harry Truman  ( 'til 1952) approves production of the hydrogen bomb and Sends air force and navy to Korea in June. 1951 - Transcontinental television begins with a speech by Pres. Truman.  Dwight D. Eisenhower  is president  from 1953 until 1961 1952 - The Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1952 is signed, removing racial and ethnic barriers to becoming a U.S. citizen.  1953 -  Julius and Ethel Rosenberg are electrocuted for their part in W.W.II espionage.  1953 - Fighting ends in Korea.  1954 -  U. S. Senator Joseph McCarthy begins televised hearings into alleged Communists in the army.  1954 - Racial segregation is ruled unconstitutional in public schools by the U.S. Supreme Court.  1955 -  Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat on a public bus in Montgomery, Alabama.  1955 - The American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations merge making the new AFL-CIO an organization with 15 million members.  1956 - The federal Highway Act is signed, marking the beginning of work on the interstate highway system.  Dr. Jonas Salk  developed a vaccine for  polio1958 - Explorer I, the first U.S. satellite, successfully orbits the earth.  December 10, 1958 - The first domestic jet-airline passenger service is begun by National Airlines between New York City and Miami.  1959 - Alaska and Hawaii become the forty-ninth and fiftieth states

  21. IN 1955 Premier Ngo Dinh Diem declares South Vietnam a republic and becomes it's first President. The First missile with an Atomic Warhead is tested. The U.S.S.R Explodes it's most powerful Nuclear Bomb. Con Ed announces it's plan to build first privately owned Nuclear Power plant.The "Nautilus", the world's first Atomic powered submarine is launched.The two big unions AF of L and the CIO merge to form world's largest union: AFL-CIO The B-52 is America's newest and biggest Jet bomber. It is the most powerful on Earth. Plans are announced to launch the first Satellite by 1957 or 1958 but Russia beat us to it Gina Lollobrigida hailed as reigning Queen of the Italian film industry.
