Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, and grew up in the Rodgers Forge neighborhood; • Education: Towson High School->University of Michigan; • His father, Fred Phelps, is working for the Maryland State Police and his mother, Deborah Sue "Debbie" Davisson Phelps, is a middle school principal(they divorced in 1994); • Michael had two older sisters, Whitney and Hilary(both were swimmers); • Phelps has ADHD(Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder); • He started swimming at the age of 7, partly because of the influence of his sisters; • At the age of 19 he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, he pleaded quilty and was ordered to

  4. serve 18 months probation and $250 fine; • Teammates call him “Gomer”, because he reminds them Gomer Pyle; • He has made an estimated $5 million per year in endorsements; • Phelps created the Michael Phelps Foundation to promote water safety and to advocate swimming for children; • In 2008 Michael was selected as one of America’s top ten most fascinating people; • He has penned two books: Beneath the Surface and No Limits:The Will to Succeed; • He co-founded the “Swim with the Stars” program, which promotes swimming and conducts camps for swimmers;

  5. From the beginning his trainer has been Bob Bowman; • He has been selected The Swimmer of The Year five times: 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008.

CareerEarly days • He trained at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club under coach Bowman; • At the age of 15 he competed at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, becoming the youngest American male swimmer at an Olympic Games in 68 years; • 9 months after the Olympics he broke the world record the 200 m butterfly, at that moment he was the youngest man to set a world record; • Phelps also broke the world record for the 400 metre individual medley and set American marks in the 100 metre butterfly and the 200 metre individual medley.

  7. 2000-2008 • At the age of fifteen(in 2000), Phelps finished in fifth place(Sydney Summer Olympic Games), in what would be the first of his several trips to Australia; • In 2004 Athens Summer Olympic Games Michael brought comparison to former swimming great Mark Spitz(Michael tryed to beat his record of seven gold medals); he won 6 gold medals and 2 bronzen ones; • During the time between 2004 and 2008 Phelps moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he became a volunteer assistant coach of the University of Michigan swimming team, where his long-time coach Bob Bowman became head coach; • In 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games he won gold medals in every event/race, where he was qualified;

  8. He holds 32 world records( 26 individual, 6 relay) and is approaching Mark Spitz’s record of 33 world records( 26 individual, 7 relay).
