  6. Life Expectancy United States • Average life expectancy in 1900 was 47 years; • Average life expectancy today is over 76 years. • One in 11 Americans was over age 65 in 1900; • One in 6 Americans is over 65 today. • Given population growth estimates, by 2050 there could be 80 million over age 65.

  7. Health Care Statistics • On average seniors visit a physician 9 times yearly; the average for the general population is 5 times yearly. • Many senior adults have multiple chronic conditions: arthritis (49%); hypertension (40%); heart disease (31%)

  8. Health Care Statistics • Senior adults are hospitalized more than 3 times as often as the general population and their stays are 50 percent longer. • Most hospitalizations are for acute episodes of chronic conditions.

  9. Disease Statistics • Heart disease is the leading cause of death among senior adults, followed by stroke and cancer. • Senior adults use twice as many prescription drugs as does the general population.

  10. Dementia Disease Statistics • Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia is likely the single greatest threat to the senior population. Dementia literal interpretation “deprived of mind”. • Alzheimer’s Disease is a complex, progressive, degenerative, irreversible brain disorder for which there is no definitive cause and, to date, no forseeable cure. • Alzheimer’s is the fourth leading cause of death in the elderly from which over 100,000 die annually.

  11. Geriatric Health Professionals • The need for health professionals with geriatric education is greater in Kansas and Missouri than the nation. • Kansas and Missouri rank 8th and 13th respectively among states with the highest population of those 65 or older. • Rural areas have higher rates of chronic diseases such as heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, arthritis, obesity and unintended injuries. • At least 49 of 105 Kansas counties are medically underserved. • Growth of elderly inmates in prisons has implications for Kansas and Missouri with two large federal prisons and state facilities.

  12. Prevention or Early Intervention Alternatives • Wellness Screening and Case-Finding • Preventive Health Services • Senior and Family Education and Resources • Focused Placement and Care Management

  13. Palliative Care • This service cares for those who are experiencing end of life issues • Options are the extent of involvement of family and type of palliative care desired.
