Understanding Diabetes: A Brief Introduction Causes and Symptoms of Diabetes
Introduction Diabetes, or Diabetes Mellitus, as it is known amongst the medical professionals, is a metabolic disorder because of high blood sugar level over a long period of time. If it left untreated, it can lead to many complications like stroke, cardiovascular disease, blurred vision, foot ulcers, chronic kidney disease, and more.
Types and Causes of Diabetes There are basically three types of diabetes: Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational Diabetes. • When the Pancreas fails to produce enough insulin, it results in Type 1 Diabetes. It is also called Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus. • Type 2 Diabetes begins to develop when there is insulin resistance. In insulin resistance, cells do not properly respond to insulin. • Gestational Diabetes is developed when a pregnant woman, without any history of diabetes, develops high blood sugar level.
Signs and Symptoms of Diabetes Most common symptoms are weight loss, polyphagia (increased hunger), polydipsia (increased thirst), and polyuria (increased urination). However, symptoms tend to rapidly develop in Type 1 Diabetes and slowly in Type 2 Diabetes. This can lead to further complications like blurred visions, fatigue, sweating, trembling, and feeling of unease.
Prevention of Diabetes There are no known preventive measures one can take for diabetes. However, Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes (which are 85-90% of all diabetes patients), can be prevented by simply maintaining the BMI range. Obesity often can lead to diabetes too.
Cure for Diabetes Diabetes is one of the chronic disorders for which there is no cure. However, it can be controlled and maintained by having healthy eating habits.
Managing Diabetes Diabetes can be managed by living a healthy lifestyle. Type 1 Diabetes is treated by a regular administration of insulin. It helps controlling diabetes. Patients with severe complications of Type 1 Diabetes are also suggested to go through pancreas transplant surgery.
