Our PAWS Initiative • Practice Respect • Academic Excellence • Work Diligently • Success Mindset Brian
The Paws initiative is PBIS Maryvale Style • OBJECTIVE: To adopt evidence-based interventions that encourage positive academic and social behavior for all students. Brian
PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports • Implementing PBIS strategies is a systems change that revamps the approach taken on student behavior. • Together we shall reinforce common language for student expectations and initiate positive reinforcements paired with rewards that encourage desired behavior. Brian
Welcome Maryvale staff • The PAWS Initiative involves all of us. • We all have specific and important roles. • Please ask questions specific to your role. • YOUR LEARNING TARGET: “I can teach, post, model, and reinforce PAWS norms.” Brian
Goals for this year! • Positive School Culture • Decrease Drug Use • Raise Grades, Attendance & Behavior = PBIS & CCCF Jen
CCCF and PBIS • College and Career Competency Framework • We will be focusing on self-regulation with an emphasis on grade checks in Advisory. • The goal is for students to take responsibility for their grades, for approaching teachers for tutoring, and to monitor and adjust as needed. • Teachers and students will be receiving resources for this . Jen
Kids are not the only people who need a caring adult in their life… • We adults need it too. • We have to support one another • On those days where you are struggling, or one of your students is struggling, think about this video. Liz
What PAWS Stands For… Practice Respect Academic Excellence Work Diligently Success Mindset Holly
The PAWS Initiative Committee will support you by… • Helping you to reinforce and reward positive behavior • Making data-based decisions • Equipping you with strategies that support positive behavior • But we need your support with… • Stakeholder buy-in and your creativity Holly
The Paws initiative is not… • Replacing referrals with PAWS Cards • A curriculum • A panacea Holly
How to begin implementation • Decorate your area with a PAWS Behavior Matrix poster. The matrix details positive behaviors differentiated by area, i.e. what PAWS behavior looks like in the classroom, hallway, PAWS Cafe, etc. Holly
Catch students doing something good, then praise and reward them. Brain
Catch Students doing something good… When you observe PAWS behavior… • Tell the student what he/she did right (positive reinforcement) • Give him/her a PAWS Card (reward) • Validate the card with both signatures (staff and student) Brian
Think of a situation in your classroom in which you can easily use the PAWS behavior matrix to reinforce a behavior. Discuss with your shoulder partner on your right. Brian
BLITZ: Announcement Initiated Hand out cards • Out with old and in with the new! • This week use up ALL of your old PAWS Cards. • When you run out of old cards, get the new ones from BRENDA DIAZ in the AP offices. • BLITZ Wednesdays, listen for an announcement. • Throughout the year, expect announcement BLITZ to help you to remember to hand out cards.
