AHAM Represent manufacturers and marketers of home appliances in the United States. We represent manufacturers of major appliances (white goods), portable appliances (kitchen countertop, air treatment, personal care), and floor care appliances. Products are electric and natural gas fueled.
Recall Effectiveness • Recalls are more effective than most people think • It is to everyone’s advantage to have high rate of recall effectiveness • All manufacturers want high rates of recall effectiveness • Recall effectiveness needs to be measured better • One size does not fit all in recalls • Registration cards: we all need to see how effective the new requirement on reg cards for juvenile furniture is. • Appliance experience: Registration cards don’t work in most cases • Better to spend time contacting consumers through other means
Recall effectiveness: Measurement • Old method not appropriate • Number of products returned/repaired • ________________________________ • Number of products produced • Need to consider consumer actions • Need to consider units still in service • Need to consider age • Modern statistical methods can help us.
Recall Effectiveness: How do we improve? • Understand where we are today • Mine the existing data • Understand older recalls with new measurement methods • Better methods of notification • Understand from experts what methods get notice and prompt action • Utilize new methods: social media, e-communications, credit cards • Retailers share consumer data • Tailor the recall notification to the product Wayne Morris wmorris@aham.org
