What is a Strategic Plan? • Tool that guides the vision and mission of an organization • Should define a goal and objectives to reach that goal • Typical strategic plans are 3-5 year efforts • An operational plan carries out the specific tasks associates with a strategic plan • Must be ‘Usable’
What are the ‘Musts’ for Strategic Planning? • Know the external opportunities and challenges • Know your organizations strengths and limitations • Be inclusive • Have an empowered committee • Have senior leadership involvement

Ten Key Elements to Strategic Planning • Communication Strategy – Plan to communicate what you are doing • Strategic Planning Task Force – Core team representative of the organization • Vision Statement – Roadmap for the future • Mission Statement – Defines who you are; core values and goals

On May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy made an historic address to Congress in which he requested more funding for the fledgling space agency that would come to be known as NASA. His incredible vision started this way: “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth”

Things to think about • There is really no right or wrong way to develop a strategic plan • Don’t be intimidated by the process • Use what is best for your organization • It is a plan…plans do change
