  3. His writing career… • American poet, essayist, and journalist • His work was often controversial • Leaves of Grass was a famous collection of poems that he worked on throughout his life • He is often referred to as the “Father of Free Verse”

  4. More facts… • Held deep admiration for President Lincoln; often spoke of and wrote in his journal about him • Walt Whitman Bridge is named for Walt Whitman as he lived in Camden, NJ for the latter part of his life
