Interesting Facts 1. Dragonflies have a unique eye structure which gives them a better eyesight than human beings. Dragonflies have up to 30,000 individual lenses, each one is a separate light-sensing organ that gives nearly a 360⁰ vision. Dragonflies are the worlds fastest insects. They can reach speeds up to 60 mph. The fastest dragonfly is the Common Green Darner “Darning Needle”, this nickname is given due to its body shape. It is one of the biggest and fastest dragonflies being able to reach speeds of up to 85km/h. One of the many techniques used by the dragonflies to catch its prey employs an optical illusion. They sneak up on their prey in such a way that makes them seem motionless but the truth is that they are moving closer and later speedily attacking its victim . The first stage after the dragon fly hatches is called the dragonfly nymphs and they live in the water for about a year. While living underwater they eat mosquito nymphs, tiny fish, and pollywogs. After leaving the water and becoming a flying insect they only live for a month. Dragonflies have two sets of wings and what is interesting is that they don’t have to flap their wings at the same time like other insects do. They flap their wings about 30 beats per second. Dragonfly fossils date back to 300 million years ago. The largest dragonfly fossil had a wing span of about 2 ½ feet long. There are approximately 5000 different species of dragonflies in the world in every continent except Antarctica. Dragonflies are called beneficial insects because they eat other harmful insects such as mosquitoes, gnats, ant termites, spiders, and even butterflies. Dragonflies do no harm people, bite, or sting.
